Happy Hot Toddy
I don't know how I got to be my age without trying a hot toddy. But this holiday season I had my first one, and it was love at first sip.
We were at an outdoor Christmas market, like the kind they have in Europe throughout December, and one of the vendors was selling them. It was cold so I decided to try one. It sounded festive and had all of my favorite ingredients: lemon, ginger, honey...it's practically a health drink! No wonder people drink them when they have a head cold. Naturally mine had whiskey in it. I mentioned it was cold outside, right?
Turns out there are a variety of recipes. The basic ingredients are whiskey , hot water and honey, and I found this one that I wanted to share with you. Serves two.
- Juice of 1 lemon
- 4 teaspoons honey (raw, unfiltered is healthiest)
- 1/2" piece of ginger, peeled and grated (Don't let this intimidate you. So easily and delicious. Just try.)
- 16-oz. boiling water
- 2 shots brandy (optional)
Divide ginger and boiling water evenly into two mugs. Let steep for 2 minutes. Add honey and lemon. Give it a good stir and then add brandy. Sit by a roaring fire to enjoy, or pour into a thermos to take on your next sleigh ride.
